Law Abiding Citizen: America’s corrupt Justice System (blog entry 12)

The film Law Abiding Citizen is about a man who watches his wife and kids get murdered in front of his eyes, and his quest to give the men responsible the punishment they deserve. At first, the movie seems to be just another dramatic murder film but the purpose of it is to show how corrupted our United States justice system is. The main character, John, watched and clearly saw the faces of the two men who killed his family, but because these murders were so smart, they were able to hide any evidence that could fully convict them of the crime. John tried everything to get the justice system to believe him and convict the murderers of the crime, but they told him he was “crazy” and imagining things due to the trauma he was experiencing at the moment of the murder. Because John is given no justice, ten years later he seeks revenge against everyone involved in the trial. He murders the jury members, the judge, and his defense lawyer, and many other innocent people in the process. John has formulated a plan over the past ten years to get himself into the harshest form of prison for committing such horrible crimes, and somehow get out off with a lesser punishment by working the justice system.

The scene I chose to analyze is when John is in the courtroom and they are deciding on a punishment for him. As the judge is asking him questions he first lies about his answers and then goes back and points out how easy it was to lie. He goes on through out the whole trial pointing out every error the judge, jury and prosecutors are making and once again proving his point of how corrupt the justice system is.

I think this film is very eye-opening to the American justice system and how many people are convicted of crimes they did not commit and the amount of people who get away with crimes they should be penalized for.

When I saw the title to your blog, I immediately felt compelled to read it, as I feel that i am ALWAYS witnessing instances that show the corruption of the justice system. I have never seen “Law Abiding Citizen” but it sounds like it has an interesting twist to an otherwise common murder movie theme. I feel like mental disorders are almost overused in the justice system…either by the system trying to keep a witness from contributing something to the outcome of a crime, like the example you provided here, or by a criminal claiming “insanity” as an excuse for the crime they committed. The scene you chose to highlight sounds interesting because of how you mention that the character proves how easy it is to lie in court. I’ve always thought about criminals that have no religious association either. What is going to stop them from lying after they put their hand on a bible and swear that they won’t lie if they don’t even believe in the bible?
