Every Damn Morning! (Blog Post 9)

Image

This image does not have any text, aside from the title. I think it speaks for itself and it definitely tells a narrative on it’s own. The narrative illustrates a boy waking up in the morning clearly excited by his elaborate, awesome dream. We know that he is fired up about it because there are exclamation points above his head. In the frames following the top frame, the boy runs down the stairs as his crazy dream is drawn in the background. As he runs down the stairs to tell the person he lives with, who is eating breakfast at a table, the drawing fades and fades until he gets to the table and the drawing is almost completely gone. The fading of his dream represents the boy forgetting the dream as he runs downstairs to tell someone about it. Words are not really necessary to understand what is happening in this comic. The artist used techniques to show exactly what was happening. The fading drawing of the boy’s dream  parallels his fading memory of the dream. It is easier for the viewer to understand this comic as well since it is based on something that has happened to all of us. We wake up and remember our dream vividly and then by the time we tell someone, it is mostly lost. I think that this comic was effective because it is organized in a clear order of the events that happen. The fading of the drawing has a pretty obvious meaning. It helps that the artist drew a square around the boy and what was happening in reality. The rest of the drawing outside of the square represents his dream and what is happening in his head. If there were not these distinct borders, it might be harder to follow.

  1. I think one important aspect to realize here is the fact that there isn’t any text. Like you have mentioned, this situation is something that everyone can relate to and fully understands, so there is no need for. There doesn’t need to be words because anyone in any country will be able to look and the frame and understand this particular situation. I also like how the drawing is with stick figures and with no color. I think this also adds to the simplicity and of it. Anyone can look at the stick figure and imagine it as themselves, which is why I believe the author chose this.

Cool picture, the author definitely kept it simple here but still while showing so much. Hate when that happens of course, but I like how you point out that the image is so expressive even while lacking words. I also think the author might have drawn it all in stick figures maybe to show how our dreams really are not as vivid as we might think they are. We wake up remembering bits and pieces and attribute it to real memories making them appear a lot more vivid. When in reality all we might really dream is the simplest idea like the stick figures and just expand on it once we wake up. Only to forget it pretty immediately once again. I like your title too, funny post!!
