Funny dogs (Blog Entry 4)

The post “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving” from Brosh’s blog Hyperbole and a Half is a very funny one.

I was attracted by the image at the beginning of this post even before I read the content of this blog entry.

Image

In fact, this image itself is kind of scary. The background is filled by the color of orange and yellow, representing fires or lava. In the foreground, there is a man, represented by black skeleton, with swim fins on his feet. The dynamic position of the man shows that he is trying to run away from lava, while the swim fins on his feet makes his effort be futile. The skeleton’s face looks hurt and despairing. The whole image expresses an extremely anxious feeling.

While by reading along the post, the feeling of extreme anxiety turns into a feeling of dramatic helplessness. The writer describes the ridiculous behavior of her dogs during the move. The helper dog is sad and worrying about all the signs of its demise from the start to the end. The simple dog enjoys the trip at start. After realizing the changes of the environment, the simple dog becomes neurotic and keeps making noise.

The writer use combination of context and images to make the article be more powerful. Like those series of image depicts the ridiculous simple behaviors of the simple dog. A specific one is the series of pictures that represents the process of the simple dog’s throwing up. The first picture depicts the throwing up of the simple dog. Then three pictures after have the expression of pondering on the dog’s face. At last, the simple dog gets a silly smile and says “ I made food! I’m magical !” This scene is so funny and makes me laugh for at least three minutes.

I also like this image because it is loud and a little frightening. I like that you picked up on the anxiety this image possesses. I think this image defiantly can stand alone as a work of art because it has such a strong presence. It immediately makes you look at it and think about its possibilities. It has a very modern feel and I think reflects a lot of the anxiety experienced today in a post modern world. I agree that this image depicts a sense of helplessness, his arms are flailing out of control and the scream certainly captures the essence of ‘help!’. I liked this entry as well because she captures those paradoxes that can haunt us.

  2. I find your analysis to be very interesting with how you describe this image as giving off a feeling of anxiousness which leads to helplessness. Once I read Brosh’s narrative I think you are right in saying that she is depicting both feelings with this one image. We all know how hard moving can be and how stressed it can make us feel. The stress of having to move animals just compounds on that anxiety and if your pet is not cooperative, eventually you may find yourself feeling a bit helpless. Luckily, moving is only temporary. Nice post!
