Bigby: good cop or bad cop? (blog 8)

I picked Bigby to analyze, specifically in the place of the plot where his is investigating the death of Rose Red. From the beginning of the book, Bigsby is a very trustworthy and powerful character. The way he speaks makes him sound educated and he seems to have Snow’s best interest at hand. He is not always nice, but his “hard-ass” personality gives him the persona of a sheriff who knows what he is talking about and who will protect his people.

He is drawn in a long, dark, detective-looking coat and brown pants, which blend together to create a dark, mysterious character. He has scruff on his face and his eyes are dark and piercing. His physical characteristics alone make him look very powerful and mysterious. The way he is portrayed through dialogue also gives him the hard-ass persona. When Bigby is investigating the crime scene of Rose Red, he is sick of Snow and her comments and says to Jack, “Jack, if she opens her mouth again, pick her up and carry her back home. If she screams of resists, you have my permission to knock her senseless”. There are times when Bigby is very sympathetic to Snow who has just lost her sister but there are also times where he will not put up with any nonsense from her. Snow is typically a strong-willed woman and does not put up with men treating her poorly or people questioning her authority. However, Bigby seems to be an exception because his power overrides her.

Bigby is always shown smoking a cigarette, and in the scene where he enters the crime scene of Rose Red, he makes Snow hold his cigarette while he investigates. Nobody messes with Bigby and if they question him, he always comes up with a better response. Snow believes what he tells her and I think she puts a lot of trust into what he says.

Bigby is a character that I enjoy analyzing because I think he will surprise us the most. I have not finished the book yet but I think his persona of a hard-ass detective will change at some point. I am very excited to see his character develop as the plot progresses!
